When I create a painting I go through several stages. This particular piece was inspired at a time when some aspects of my life were causing me to face some past wounds that were once again rearing their ugly head. Things I thought I was done with but in reality were only temporarily shut away.
For me though being able to pick up a paintbrush allows me to take the confusion and pain and put it onto the canvas where I can see it.
When I began this piece I had only the image of a girl with her head in her lap seeking solace in the darkness, however as it progressed I felt the comfort of a mermaid by her side and a return to the innocence that a small child’s hand in yours can bring. It was at this point that the central character was given wings and her true nature could be seen.
So whilst it’s true to say this painting speaks of some sadness, the journey of creating it, served as a reminder that allowing the inner child to create within you a space for healing, is sometimes all that is needed to strengthen your wings and re-ignite the magic that is your unique light in this world.
